FashionTALK by He...Mandalynn Swimwear

Mandalynn is a Baltimore-based swimwear brand. With inspiration coming from lingerie, our smooth lines show off the natural curves of many different female body types. While some styles remain slightly basic and others are more detailed, all of our styles are meant to be mixed and matched - paired however you like depending on your mood. Our inspiration comes from a passionate, free-spirited, and adventurous way of life. This mentality is what drives the Mandalynn brand. Our customers - MANDALYNN BABES - are the epitome of this.

Fashion by She and Mandalynn designer, Amanda Dukehart, thought now was a great time to sit down discuss the brand, the future, bikinis and more...

She: Describe Mandalynn in one word.
Amanda: Fresh

She: What sets the MLbabe apart?
Amanda: She doesn't follow trends, she makes them!

She:What made you want to become a swimwear designer?
Amanda:I've always had a love for swimwear and felt that it was an industry lacking in originality.  I love getting creative with tiny amounts of fabric and thinking outside of the box.  I am also a big fan of the booty! haha

She: What is one piece of clothing you cannot live without besides a bikini?
Amanda: hmm that's a hard one because I have a new favorite item of clothing every week!  I have a good pair of boyfriend jeans I would prefer not to live without! A good pair of Jeans is just as hard to come by as a good swimsuit.

She: What are your favorite bikini accessories?
Amanda: I think hats are always a great way to accessorize.  I have a jungle themed snapback I love!

He: Since Mandalynn is lingerie inspired, do you see yourself designing actual lingerie in the future? Amanda: I've thought about it for sure.  However, it's not something I'm ready to take on anytime soon.

She: What is your all- time favorite piece you’ve designed for your line? Favorite piece in the current collection?  Amanda: Probably the Sadie.  It was in the past Summer collection and I brought it back for Spring 2015 because it's just that good.  It's probably the most flattering suit you could own.. at least in my opinion!  It's super 90s in cut and style which is always good as far as I'm concerned too.

She:  In your opinion, whats the biggest "fashion faux pas” when it comes to bikini wear?"
Amanda: Ah but there are so many!! haha.  I think the worst is when someone wheres heels with their suit.  They just are trying way too hard and it doesn't make sense.  Unless you are having it double as a top worn under a skirt or something..

She: If you could pick one person, that hasn’t worn one yet, to wear a Mandalynn bikini who would it be?
Amanda: Cara Delevigne would be killer in some MANDALYNN.  She is the epitome of an MLBABE.

She: Where do you see swimwear going in the next few years? Do you forecast any major changes in fabrication/ fit/ style?
Amanda: I see swimwear designs getting wackier by the day, which I am a fan of.  I hope people don't go too overboard and make sure to pay attention to comfort and fit.  There will also definitely be more and more suits that double as ready to wear which is always a plus.

She: Seems like bikinis are getting smaller, are girls getting more confident in their bodies or just going with what looks good?
Amanda: Bikinis are getting smaller and I love it.  Of course there are tiny suits that look a little too much like a stripper should be wearing it, but as long as it's classy and well done I am all about the smaller suits.  I think as a customer you just have to be aware of your body and know what looks good on you.  That being said, if you have a big booty theres no reason not to show it off!!  I design suits that may be cheeky but they will have more coverage in other areas such as the top!  Gotta keep it well balanced.

She: Where would you like to see Mandalynn in 5 years? Whats next up for Mandalynn?
Amanda: I'd love to grow our own site more and possibly do mens?  I have something in the works but don't wanna release anything until I am ready.  There are so many other ideas I have for the future of Mandalynn but for right now I am just taking it one day at a time!

She: Any advice for the aspiring designer trying to break into the market?
Amanda:I think the most important thing is to find your niche and be prepared to work. Unless you have a major investor or you just "know" people.  I've worked my way up without either which is something I am pretty proud of.  I guess also just knowing your customer.  We have a strong following and I think it's due to the fact I can relate to our customers very easily as I am one of them.

She: Any last words?
Amanda:Be true to yourself and get weird.  Normal is boring.
